As Samsung Galaxy S II Wins T3?s Phone of the Year Award, Samsung UK Confirms “Nexus Prime” Coming Sooner Than We Think

This image has no alt text

T3′s Gadget Awards are going on right now and Samsung had the honor of accepting the Phone of the Year award for their Galaxy S II smartphone. Great! But that isn’t even close to being the story here. After accepting the award, Samsung UK’s Andrew Glass, a sales director, was in such a good mood that he confirmed to T3 that the Nexus Prime would be coming a sooner than we think:

You will have an announcement of the Nexus Prime very shortly and will be seeing it in shops sooner than you think

So number one, that lends credence to our source yesterday who told us to expect the device to see its first release on November 3rd and to expect an announcement sooner than that. Secondly, it’s the first time that anyone from Samsung, Google or anyone else directly involved has mentioned the phone by name (or mentioned it period) and he mentioned it as the “Nexus Prime.”

No one’s sure at this point what it’ll be called, but other possibilities include Samsung Galaxy Nexus (it appeared on Picasa when someone uploaded photos from the phone) and the DROID Prime, which would be Verizon’s version (though some are suggesting this will be close to a Galaxy S II handset with TouchWiz UI). We’ll surely be glad when all this is officially cleared up. Sit tight in the meantime. [Thanks Enea!]

Photos Taken From Samsung Galaxy Nexus (Nexus Prime) Show Up on Picasa via Google+

Looks like a good chunk of Googlers have the Nexus Prime in their hand. A couple of photos have been uploaded to Picasa, Google’s image hosting site, through Google+, Google’s social networking site. And you know what? It doesn’t shoot a bad picture at all.

More than the photos themselves, it looks like “Galaxy Nexus” is a strong contender for the device’s retail name as it has been listed as that in the TIFF information. It’s a bit of a stray from the norm, but we really couldn’t care about the name – just give us the phone! Check the photos out here and here. Download: Ice Cream Sandwich Wallpapers

If you’re the type who likes to apply new wallpapers from new versions of Android, listen up – our friend P3Droid has come through the clutch again with another leak from Ice Cream Sandwich. We’re getting wallpapers, and while wallpapers may not be as big as, say, an app, they are just as exciting for us.

Iknow I’m using the dark rainbow of colors you see above personally. This one’s a .APK file – just install it and they’ll be in your wallpaper chooser. Not great for flexibility (you probably won’t want a ton of wallpapers you aren’t going to use) but if something here interests you give it a look-see. Check the rest out over at MyDroidWorld where you can also find a download link.

[Update] Nexus Prime Release Coming Nov. 3rd, Says Verizon Inside Source

This image has no alt text

We’ve got some thoughts on Verizon’s Nexus Prime from a trustworthy insider (we’ve been able to confirm their legitimacy, though we can’t disclose through which means) via AndroidForums.com. Our friend and esteemed moderator Steven58 was the one who interfaced with them and this is what they had to say regarding the Nexus Prime (there is also a bit of commentary in there regarding the Moto DROID RAZR).

The idea I’m getting from official testers is that the screen and user experience is much better in the Nexus device, and the overall advantage is the presence of Ice Cream Sandwich (I’ve personally noted this to be true). But I’ve also been told by those who have tested it that the RAZR is very fast, smooth, and has a great battery life. The screen, although not quite up to Nexus, is a big improvement over the Bionic for those who didn’t like it. Verizon is very, very excited for both devices. I don’t get the feeling they’re “siding” with one over the other, but I can tell you that they never had a lot of confidence in the Bionic having a lot of staying power. Their decision to release the Bionic as is was more of a contractual obligation than a real belief in the product. They are much more invested in the RAZR.

He goes on to say that we should definitely expect to see this thing announced on Nov. 3rd. And if we know Verizon, we’re sure the actual device will be available very shortly after that. We’ll circle that date and be on the lookout. In the meantime, we’ll be drooling over any and all information we can get on both the Prime and Ice Cream Sandwich. Grab a napkin and join us! [Thanks Steve! AndroidForums.com]

[Update]: Looks like our source worded it wrong. November 3rd is actually pegged as the Prime’s release date, meaning we should be seeing an announcement much sooner than that. Huzzah!

Android’s New Look: Ice Cream Sandwich – Love It Or Hate It? [Poll]

This image has no alt text

I’m gonna keep this real simple for you guys. We’ve all seen the leaked video of the Nexus S running Ice Cream Sandwich. Many said it was a fake — turns out those guys were wrong (yeah, I’m calling you out). Today, we saw a newer build of Ice Cream Sandwich this time running on a bonafide Nexus Prime (Galaxy Nexus, Droid Prime, Rodimus Prime) in a much clearer but still kinda fuzzy video. Reading through the comments I found a lot of people either loved the new look of Android or absolutely hated it. Since I’m a man of the people, I wanted to throw up a quick poll and get some solid statistics — Ice Cream Sandwich: Love it or hate it? Indifferent? That means you like turtles! Go!

First Glimpse Of The Samsung Nexus Prime Revealed [Video]

This image has no alt text

I’m trying everything in my power to keep my composure right now but — WE FINALLY HAVE THE FIRST GLIMPSE AT THE SAMSUNG Nexus Prime !! Samsung has just uploaded a teaser video for their upcoming Google announcement at this year’s Unpacked 2011 event being held at CTIA in San Diego, CA. Aside from being overly charming (and cleansing our palates of today’s earlier announcement) at the very end of the video we finally get a side-view of what we believe to be the Samsung Nexus Prime. You can see a Nexus S style curved display (video adds extra emphasis with blue accent) and 3 gold contact pins cluing us in that a dock will also be accompanying the device.

Go nuts. Tell all your friends. Slap yo momma. Something BIG is coming!

UPDATE: Came across a bigger, clearer pic taken from the video for you guys (click a total of 2 times for full high resolution image). I messed around with the contrast of 2 super imposed images of the device from when the shine revealed both the top and bottom of the phone. This gives us a much better look at the Nexus Prime’s form factor. You can see, the curve isn’t as dramatic as the blue line suggests. Much more mild like the Nexus S. I don’t know about you guys, but it looks a lot like a curved Nexus One and to me, that is a very good thing.

Samsung Nexus Prime (GT-I9250) Drops By The Bluetooth SIG

This image has no alt text

It’s getting closer guys! Can you feel it? The eve of the Samsung Nexus Prime is almost upon us and if you needed any further proof then check out the GSM version (GT-I9250) that just passed through the Bluetooth Special Interest Group today. The “geographic availability” seems to list it as a European device but I think we fully expect this device to cover all GSM bands once finally available. All the pieces are in place. It’s only a matter of time peoples. The hype on this phone is elevating to near epic proportions. Can you feel it?

Samsung Nexus Prime to be Revealed at CTIA 2011?

This image has no alt text

Have you checked your watch lately? Why? Because it’s time for some more Nexus Prime (Galaxy Prime/Droid Prime/etc.) rumors! This time we’re looking at what could be the unveiling of the Samsung Nexus Prime this year at CTIA 2011.

How do you we know it will be announced? Well, besides the fact that CTIA is one of the wireless industry’s biggest events, there is this unusually secretive “product to be announced from Samsung Mobile” finalist for CTIA’s “Hot for the Holidays Award” in the “Gamer and Entertainment” category. The undescript device also pops-up in the “Shutterbug” category giving us a clue that the Nexus Prime could have a much improved camera sensor (fingers crossed).

I suppose there is always the possibility that this could be an entirely different unannounced device from Samsung Mobile but given the way Samsung has revealed all (but one) of their cards for this year, I’d be willing to wager this is the one and only Nexus Prime. I can tell you this, Phandroid will be live from CTIA 2011 from October 11-13th and bringing you the very latest in Android gadgetry. I can hardly wait. What do you guys think? Excited for Nexus Prime to finally be officially announced at CTIA in only a few more weeks?

More Samsung Prime Rumors – This Time Spotted In The Wild?

This image has no alt text

Another day, another dose of Samsung Prime rumors. Alright, out of all the rumors we’ve heard so far — this one deserves to be taken with the smallest grain of salt. Apparently, TheDroidGuy was traveling through Las Vegas this week for Verizon’s developer conference when he ran into a Samsung employee. He noticed the guy was holding a nondescript Android device and asked if he could take a look at it. After a bit of persuading, the Samsung employee paused, looked over both his shoulders and finally agreed. The Sammy employee took them into his private office, where he instructed TheDroidGuy (Kyle) to remove his bags, cell phones and possibly all articles of clothing before he could proceed. Once Kyle complied, he whipped out the phone and let Kyle manhandle the device.

Identified as the Samsung Nexus Prime the device was described as looking very similar to the Nexus S only bigger and with a home button smack on the front. The device also had an 8MP camera on the back, 2MP front facing camera and running Android 2.3 Gingerbread. Wait- what? Yeah. Apparently, Ice Cream Sandwich is still getting the bugs ironed out and isn’t quite ready to come out of the freezer just yet. Hence, the reason for the strange homescreen button on this early, presumably developer handset. Probably the most interesting bit of information he was able to squeeze out of the Samsung employee was the fact that there would be both a GSM and CDMA version of the device, meaning you can look forward to a Nexus Prime no matter which carrier you’re on.

Alright guys, for the final verdict I’m turning this over to you, the jury. Bogus? Real? Was this really the Samsung Prime? Keep in mind Kyle made no mention of his face melting off or hair turning white and last time I checked, that was one of the features of the Nexus Prime…

[Update: Probably Not]: Is This the Nexus Prime? [Photo]

This image has no alt text

[Update]: Thanks to our gracious readers, we’ve found the source of the photo. Can’t say we’ve ever seen it or heard of the site that is hosting it. But whoever HanTech’s webmaster is, they may want to be informed that this is likely fake. In any case, I wouldn’t be mad if it did indeed turn out to look that way. [Thanks PimpStrong, Kashif!]

Before we begin, let me say that we’re extremely skeptical here and acknowledge that it’s very possible this could be fake. In fact, I thought I saw this photo before, and saw it be promptly debunked (if any of you remember seeing this before, please feel free). My 30 minute search for this didn’t come up with anything.

With that said, some retailer named HandTec in the UK has apparently listed the Nexus Prime as for sale following rumors that the device will instead be called the Samsung Galaxy Prime. There was no price at all listed on the product page, but they left behind the photo you see above.

The device pictured looks similar to what recent rumors have described – it looks like it’ll have a huge screen (4.65 inches is the current belief) with an HD resolution. The lack of capacitive buttons make room for virtual on-screen navigation buttons that we see on current Honeycomb tablets. Also, the chassis pictured may represent the metallic nature that new rumors have pegged it to be. Here are the specs on the listing:

Android 4.0, 4.6-inch Super AMOLED, 1.5GHz Processor, 5MP Camera + F 1MP, 1080p HD Video, WiFi, GPS

Android version 4.0 is what they’re calling it. And the 1.5GHz processor is interesting, as well. We expect Samsung to put the Exynos processor – that has proven to be very powerful on the Galaxy S II – inside.

If you remember a while back, Samsung was rumored to be increasing the clock speed of the Exynos processors in later iterations of the Galaxy S II from 1.2GHz to 1.4GHz. Perhaps they went a step above that for this offering. Odd here are the weaker camera sensors compared to their Galaxy S II line, but we all know megapixels mean nothing.

We don’t want to put too much stock into this finding, but there it is anyway. If any of you have seen this before and can claim it to be a photoshop, please let us know. Otherwise, we may have gotten a quick first glimpse of the Samsung Nexus Prime (or Galaxy Prime, or whatever). [Thanks, Molo!]
