AT&T to Start Selling the Acer Iconia Tab A501 Honeycomb Tablet From September 18

AT&T has big plans for this month and no, we’re not talking about the iPhone 5, but rather about a new tablet they’re going to sell. It’s the Acer Iconia Tab A501 I’m referring to, a Honeycomb model that will debut on this carrier starting September 18. The device supports HSPA+ connectivity and the 501 is simply an enhanced version of the A500 tablet released months ago.

Keep in mind that A501 should have been released in Q2, becoming the first 4G tablet on AT&T. However, this title was snatched by the HTC Jetstream, the upcoming 4G slate with 10 inch diagonal and Sense customization. The A501 may not support LTE, but HSPA+ is still a pretty nice addition to its supported connectivity list.

Other than that the specs are predictable, including a 10 inch 1280 x 800 pixel display, dual core 1GHz processor in the Nvidia Tegra 2 flavor, plus front and rear cameras. Expect an over the air update to Android 3.1 soon enough, but we don’t know exactly when. The price of the A501 will be $480 in full retail, or $330 on AT&T’s 2 year contract. Starting 18 September, the device will hit the shops.

AT&T announced over the weekend the launch of the Acer Iconia Tab A501 on their HSPA+ network. The not-so-LTE “4G” Android Honeycomb tablet will be available come September 18th for the price of $480. If you decide to sign up for a two-year data contract, the price drops to $330. The Iconia Tab A501 features a 10.1-inch display, dual-core Tegra 2 CPU, and a full-size USB port. It ship with Android 3.0, but an over-the-air update is in the works to bring the slate to Android 3.1. Data plans start at $15 for 250MB with a $25 option netting you 2GB. Data can be purchased on a month-to-month basis or as a monthly plan. Check out the full press release below.

Microsoft Adds ViewSonic, Acer to its Android Cash Grab

Microsoft has reached licensing agreements with ViewSonic and Acer that will see the two companies pay the computer giant an undisclosed fee for every Android device sold. The news, which Microsoft confirmed today, follows similar deals struck with companies such as HTC, deals that provide the software maker with an estimated three to five times the revenue earned from sales of their own Windows Phone platform. The licensing deals also cover upcoming devices using Google’s Chrome OS.

Microsoft is quick to point out that their method of solving intellectual property disputes is “commercially reasonable” to “address Android’s IP issues,” perhaps taking a jab at competitor Apple’s insistence on suing first, settling later. Microsoft is perfectly happy leaving the competition on the market — rather than forcing sales bans — provided they can turn a few dollars off of it.

Tablet PC Not That Hot Any More, According to Acer Official

JT Wang, Acer chairman recently discussed the tablet PC’s evolution and the effect it’s having on the notebook segment. Right now it appears that people aren’t as crazy about tablets as they were initially and the whole fever is going down.

Consumers are starting to go back to notebooks again, at least some of them preferring Intel’s Ultrabooks and waiting for Microsoft’s Windows 8. Acer is preparing to launch an Ultrabook in September with a pretty low price of $799, according to Wang. This product comes after a period of surveys and the discovery that consumers actually want an ultrabook right now.

Wang is not the only one with this idea, since there are other players in the PC industry with the same predictions. They seem to see the tablets as more of an entertainment gear than learning and productivity devices.  Asustek Computer, Dell, Toshiba, Lenovo and HP will also be launching ultrabooks in Q4 and some of them in Q1 2012. Will these products be able to threaten the tablets or at least rob them of market share? I guess that the iPad will be the one to decide that…

Acer Iconia Tab A500 Receiving Android 3.2 Update Ahead of Schedule

This image has no alt text

Earlier this month Acer announced that the Android 3.2 update for their Iconia Tab A500 would be delayed until August 25th. A couple days shy of the expected rollout, news is spreading that the update is already making its way to some A500 and A501 tablets in Poland. With the update, the Iconia Tab joins the Motorola XOOM and Asus Eee Pad Transformer with the latest version of Android Honeycomb. Enhancements include full SD card support and a new zoom-to-scale mode for non-native applications. We expect the update will begin popping up in other regions of Europe and beyond soon enough.

They are offering the Tegra 2 powered Honeycomb tablet for $328 buckaroos and a $50 e-gift card that can be used on both Walmart.com or SamsClub.com. Buy a tablet, get a matching rake. Months after its larger 10-inch sibling hit shelves and nearly a year since Acer first announced their intention to sell a 7-inch Android slate, the Iconia Tab A100 is now up for sale in the United States. Aside from filling a gap in Acer’s product lineup, the tablet is also notable for being the first 7-inch slate to ship with Honeycomb on board, Android 3.2. The A100gets filled out with an NVIDIA Tegra 2 dual-core CPU, a 1024×600 capacitive touch display, 5MP camera with 720p HD video capture, and an advertised 5 hours of battery life. The slate also sports a 2MP front-facing camera, microUSB and microHDMI ports, and microSD slot for expanding on provided internal storage.

Three versions of the Iconia Tab A100 are available, starting at $329.99 for the 8GB flavor. For 16GB of storage the price increases to $349.99. A Walmart exclusive version of the tablet mirrors the specs of the 8GB model.

Acer Iconia Tab A500 Receiving Android 3.2 OTA Update August 25th

This image has no alt text

Acer announced on their Malaysian Facebook page that they will be releasing the 3.2 OTA update for their Iconia Tab A500 on August 25ht. Apparently, there was a minor setback due to a few policy changes from Google and that’s the reason for the delay.

Dear Fans, due to some policy changes from Google where Acer has to comply, the A500 Honeycomb 3.2 OTA update will be postponed to 25th August, we apologize for the dissapointments and upsets but we will be bringing the final and stable update to all of our A500 fans asap! Please be patient guys :)

First time I’ve heard of Google crackin’ the whip. Hopefully this isn’t just limited for Asian markets and this OTA will be pushed out stateside as well. Either way, it doesn’t look like all you Iconia Tab users will have to wait much longer to get your taste of Android 3.2 Honeycomb.

Thanks, Andrzej!

Acer Finally Announces Launch Date For The 4.8-inch Iconia Smart

This image has no alt text

It’s been a long time coming but Acer has announced via their Deutschland Facebook page that the Iconia Smart will finally be launching this September in Germany. Although the 4.8-inch “phoneblet” sounds like it would be huge in comparison to current 4.3-inch devices but really, the screen only adds pixels along the top and bottom of the device, providing for a longer screen. Should be perfect for killing those annoying black bars when watching movies. The phone packs a 1024×480 resolution display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, Android 2.3 Gingerbread and will retail for around €499 ($710). Still no word when/if we’ll see this device stateside but we’ll keep you guys posted.

Acer Iconia Tab A100 Coming in August, Priced at $300

Acer’s 7 inch Honeycomb tablet has had a twisted and long road till its debut, but that time has come. Or at least a new launch time frame… The Iconia Tab A100 is coming to stores in early August with a price tag of $300. This Tegra 2 unit was supposed to come in the middle of May, but it was delayed because of Honeycomb problems.

This model will be accompanied in the launch by new Aspire notebooks. As far as the A100 goes, this is considered the little brother of the 10 inch A500 model and in case you’re wondering about specs, know that the phone packs a 1GHz Tegra 2 CPU, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of storage, so nothing unbelievably new here.

The resolution of the 7 inch display will 1024 x 600 pixels. Will you buy this $300 wonderkid?
