There’s a new tablet coming from China, no surprise here, but some of you may be familiar with the name Malata. This was the company that made the Evolio Neura 3G, a Romanian rebranded tablet that was actually made in China and that I reviewed for you all here. Things have changed since that failure of a product…
The new Malata Z-Pad comes with Android 3.2Â and it’s called the T9. This device uses an Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, a 10 inch display with 1200 x 800 pixel resolution, 1 GB of RAM, 16/32GB of storage , Bluetooth, WiFi and GPS. There’s also a 3650mAh battery on board. From what I can see here, the specs are very similar to the ones of the Evolio Neura 3G, aside from the Honeycomb 3.2 part.
Also, as a bonus, we get cameras this time, unlike the original Malata model rebranded in Romania. I’m talking about a main 5MP camera and a secondary 2MP one upfront, for videocalls. There’s also a standard USB port on board and a mini USB one. As far as connectivity goes, there’s WCDMA 3G and Malata also promised a new piece of gear called the Zpad T10, an ultrabook with dual touch 7 inch display.
Meizu have long time eliminated the stigma of a company that copied the iPhone (among the first with a successful model actually) and are now into serious business, with a new appealing phone and… according to rumors, a tablet as well. The info leaked on the web after a patent application was made by Meizu.
This application was made public by the Chinese State Intellectual Property Office, revealing both a case accessory and the slate. This looks like a device with a full QWERTY keyboard, most likely Android as the OS (Honeycomb) and surely a dual core (at least) CPU. Last we heard, Jack Wong, the CEO of Meizu promised a glorious future for his company’s smartphones, including a quad core model, but no trace of tablet plans was seen so far.
If the company plays its cards right and reveals a products that resembles the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer even a bit and undercuts its price, it may have a chance. Otherwise… it’s just another failed product, like the Toshiba Thrive. How about launching this tablet with a quad core CPU? That would certainly rock the market!

If you’re looking for a cheap tablet, look no further than the Evolio Neura 3G, a Romanian tablet going for $500 in the WiFi version and for $630 in the 3G version… Expensive? Yes, it is, but wait till you see the specs! We’ve got an “incredible” dual core Tegra 2 CPU and an unseen Android 2.2 Froyo. Appealing? You bet!
Don’t look for a camera at the back, since the device comes with an incredible 1.3 megapixel front webcam and a truly amazing 9.7 inch display. I hope you realize that I’m being sarcastic right now, since this device is truly a failure. Being form Romania, I would have expected my home country to deliver something more pleasing, at least for the local market, but we’ve got Allview for that, not that they’re doing any good, either… It’s a bit wrong to call this a Romanian tablet, since it’s a Chinese Malata slate with a rebranding, after all.
Locally, this model is marketed as an iPad killer, as lame as that may seem. Yes, the tablet has a 9.7 inch full HD capacitive screen, with a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution, but is that enough? Absolutely nothing sets it apart from the competition and I didn’t even feel those 1GB of RAM, dual core CPU and whatnot… The lag was there, quite a strong presence actually and the slate would freeze up on me at times or even worse, wake up from sleep mode suddenly, especially when charging.
You get 16GB of storage on this device, in case that interests you and I’m very bothered by the decision of the product maker to fool people who don’t really know what they’re buying. Let me tell you how: they’ve used a wallpaper and watch widget that imitate the look and feel of Honeycomb to trick people into believing this is an Android 3.0 tablet. Also, Evolio promised Honeycomb as an update from Froyo but you and me both know that this will never happen…
As far as connectivity goes, you get a 3G SIM slot at the back and WiFi connectivity (that failed to connect to some networks), no trace of HDMI, but at least a full USB is there, in case you’re interested. Evolio was also keen on mentioning that many accessories will be made available for the product, ranging from docks with HDMI out, to all sorts of cases, keyboards, speakers, pouches and more.
In the end I would advise you not to purchase this tablet, at least not without Honeycomb. In some countries for the same price you can get an iPad 2 and that says a lot about this device…
