Dell and Baidu Planning Tablets and Handsets With Their Own Branding

After finding out that the Alibaba e-commerce giant from China plans to launch its own tablet, it doesn’t surprise us that Baidu, the Chinese search engine bigshot has similar plans. Teaming up with Dell, they plan to build not only a slate, but also a smartpone or two.

With China being of the quickest developing markets for tablets and mobile devices, it would be a pity not to take advantage of this aspect. The handsets from Baidu will bear the name of the service, one of the largest brands in this country and Dell also jumped on board, hoping to get some appreciation from the public in China. Meanwhile, analysts say that Dell’s attempt is in vain, as Apple remains everyone’s favourite brand locally.

There’s no timeline for the launch of the tablet and smartphone, but Reuters reports that there’s a Chinese outlet announcing the products for November. Dell and Baidu have collaborated on a Baidu-branded Dell Streak 5 tablet previously, so they have the experience and expertise.

Dell Streak 7 Scheduled for Honeycomb Upgrade

Dell is getting ready to join the companies with Honeycomb devices, but not through an entirely new slate. It appears that their Dell Streak 7 model will receive the Android Honeycomb upgrade. This 7 inch tablet comes with a dual core Tegra 2 CPU, but also with a pretty poor resolution of 800 x 480 pixels.

As if the bad resolution wasn’t enough, the product was also crippled by Android 2.2 Froyo, but no more! Dell has promised an upgrade to Honeycomb and it seems we will get Android 3.2 here, which works just fine on this type of resolution and device. During IFA 2011 a couple of Streak 7 units with Honeycomb on board were seen. The majority of them had vanilla Honeycomb, coupled with Dell’s customized Stage UI as an extra.

No clear release date has been announced, but we’re hoping the software will come rather sooner than later. Also, in case this device is not so appealing, you might look into a 10 inch Dell tablet with Honeycomb or the fresh Galaxy Tab 7.7 for a more unusual diagonal and Super AMOLED Plus display.

Dell Isn’t Ready To Quit The Streak 7 – Android 3.2 Honeycomb Update Coming Soon

Well, I didn’t see this one coming. Remember the Dell Streak 5 and Streak 7? Well, it looks like Dell isn’t quite ready to give up on at least one of those devices. The Dell Streak 7 will reportedly see an update soon, jumping all the way from Android 2.2 Froyo, straight to Android 3.2 Honeycomb. A few demo units were spotted running the latest version of Android at IFA with Dell’s “Stage UI” thrown into the mix as well.

Exactly when the update will begin rolling out wasn’t mentioned but seeing how Honeycomb is already up and running on these demo units is a good indication we wont have to wait long. Dell’s 7-inch tablet has some fairly good specs with its Nividia Tegra 2 processor but unfortunate 800×480 resolution screen. If this sounds like your cup of tea, you may want to start scouring Craigslist for a great deal on one of these bad boys in the meantime.

Dell has announced through a special landing page on their website that their original Android device that blurred the line between tablet and phone has reached its end of life. “[The] Streak 5 is now longer available,” reads the page’s headline. An image of a forward-looking beauty in car is accompanied by the text “Goodbye, Streak 5. It’s been a good ride.” Stop it, Dell, you’re getting me all teary eyed. The Streak 5 is survived by the Dell Streak 7 and the Dell Streak 10 Pro, which is still awaiting its release here in the US. Post your condolences for the Streak 5 in the comments below.

Dell has been working their way up the ruler over the past year or two, releasing the 5-inch Dell Streak followed by a 7-inch version of the tablet. But with the Dell Streak Pro, the manufacturer is finally playing with the big boys. The 10-inch tablet has been pictured sitting pretty next to its smaller counterparts, flexing its Honeycomb muscle in all its glory. The Streak Pro marks Dell’s first Android 3.0 slate and also sports a dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 CPU, 1GB of RAM, and dual cameras. The 10.1-inch screen has a resolution of 1280×800.

The Streak Pro is said to be headed to China this week, though no mention has been made of a release in other markets.
