Windows 8 Tablet With Intel CPU to be Showcased at This Week’s BUILD Event

Microsoft’s got the big BUILD event this week, that will allow us to catch a glimpse of Windows 8 running on a tablet. Rumors say that will be an ARM slate, but it’s very likely it will be Intel material, according to CNET.

This is a risky move for Intel, that will be beaten by ARM through comparisons if its product fails to deliver as good a mobile experience as the one of ARM and Nvidia. The probleme here lies within the Core platforms, that make the netbooks hot and heavy. Oaktrail, Medfield and Moorestown are on par with the Cortex A9 as far as processing power goes, so all that Intel can work with is a tablet-optimized Cedar Trail.

The result could be a low power, high performing dual core 1.8 GHz tablet, maybe the Samsung Slate PC pictured below. CNET seems to believe that the Windows 8 tablet shown at BUILD will be made by Samsung, that’s becoming ubiquiotous in every launch event lately. However, I’m not so sure I trust Intel to deliver a good mobile architecture with its CPU…

Microsoft Ready to Show off Windows 8 on Tablet PC Next Week!

Reuters informs us that Microsoft will be pulling a nifty stunt next week, by unveiling and demoing Windows 8 on a tablet PC on stage. This is not the first time we’ve seen a demo of Win 8, since CEO Steve Ballmer also offered a sneak peek of the OS last year.

This time, it will be turn of Windows chief Steven Sinofsky to showcase an early version of the touch-supporting and tablet-friendly platform that’s right now codenamed Windows 8. This demo will take place during the annual Microsoft conference in Anaheim, taking place next Tuesday. Investors really want to see the future here, so much is at stake. We all know how the next iOS will look on the iPad 3, or at least we can imagine, while Android Ice Cream Sandwich shouldn’t surprise us either, so surprises must come from Microsoft this time.

Microsoft has yet to enter the tablet biz hardware-wise, although it had the Courier among its plans for a while, but that’s ancient history right now. It’s pretty interesting to note that MS foretold the tablet-based future 10 years ago and still they’re struggling to find their place on the iPad-ruled market.

Last we heard, HP and Microsoft were shaking hands and showing off a prototype slate in 2010 that didn’t even make it to the stores… Will Ballmer and co finally strike Apple?

ASUS Eee Slate B121 Tablet Gets Launched, Enterprise Mode ON!

ASUS has taken the stealth way to release the enterprise tablet Eee Slate B121, that’s shown in the picture below. No bells and whistles or Unpacked events were used for it, maybe because it’s a 12 inch unit that’s designed for professionals, not the general public.

This tablet PC comes with a multitouch display, compatible with a Wacom digitizer pen. Drawing us back from this device is the huge price of $1499 for the device, which is a bit too much, especially if you’re not happy with Windows 7 Professional on it… The B121 comes with enterprise security options, like remote locking, remote data wipe features, locating lost and stolen devices and much more.

There’s also a dedicated recovery team working with the law enforcement to find your device, cool as that may seem. Windows Bitlocker and the Trusted Platform Module are also on board. And finally there’s the specs list of the new model:

  • Display: 12.1 inch LED backlit screen, 1280 x 800
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-470UM
  • Memory: 4GB RAM, 64GB SSD storage
  • Camera: 2MP front facing
  • Connectivity: mini HDMI, 2 USB 2.0 ports, SDHC card slot

Will you get one for the hefty price mentioned above?

IFA 2011: Viewsonic Showcases New Tablets in Berlin: ViewPad 7x, ViewPad 7e, ViewPad 10pro

With IFA 2011 having started just now, it’s time for the big players to showcase their tablets and smartphones. Among these companies we find the folks of ViewSonic, with some new tablets and a handset. The new tablets are ViewPad 7x, ViewPad 7e and ViewPad 10pro, while the new phone is a dual SIM Android unit dubbed ViewSonic V350.

ViewPad 7x is a 7 inch Android 3.2 Honeycomb slate with a stylish design, that was created with the aid of injection moulding techniques. This is a light device, but also durable, that comes with a customized UI known as ViewScene 3D. Under the hood there’s a dual core Nvidia Tegra 2 processor, integrated GPS and the device also comes with a 10 point multitouch display we already mentioned, supporting a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution.

8GB of memory and a couple of bundled applications round up the specs of the tablet coming in late September with a 349 euro price tag. Moving on, we find the ViewPad 7e, a compact device with a 4:3 ratio multitouch display and pre-installed Amazon kindle software. This unit is great for e-reading, web browsing and multimedia features. WiFi, Bluetooth and HDMI are also on board and you should expect a product launch in late Q4 for 169 euros.

Finally, the ViewPad 10pro is a Windows Oaktrail tablet, with a 10 inch display and Windows 7 Professional on board, as well as Android 2.3. This dual OS unit will hit the stores on September 5th with a price tag of 499 euros for the WiFi version.

Windows 8 Tablet Apps Come With Custom Designs, Pictured in Screenshots

After checking out one of Microsoft’s upcoming quad core tablets with Windows, it’s time to have a good look at the latest iteration of this OS. I’m talking about Win 8, of course, that will be more detailed during the Build conference in September. However, till then we can see specially customized applications for this platform.

ZDNet has uncovered the software, one being a news reader for USA Today and the other a social travel application, created by Jetstream. The first was found in the portofolio of the company’s Art Director Robbie Dillon and he is claiming that this design is Windows 8-ready. It seems a bit strange, since we’ll see this OS barely in 2012, so there’s a long way to go. Dillon claims that the USA Today app will keep the look and feel of the Windows 8 Metro UI and deliver all the needed content.

Following the same route is the Jetstream-developed app that will look like Metro UI again. This company has a solid advantage, being a Microsoft Gold Certified Partner, meaning that it gets months of advance on its apps for future MS products. Let’s just hope that not all Win 8 apps will have to imitate the operating system and we’ll see some originality here…

ViewSonic ViewPad 10pro Dual OS Tablet Announced

Remember ViewSonic? This is one of those brands behind pretty appealing tablets, just like Archos for example… The reason they’re in the news this time is their new device, the ViewPad 10 pro, a dual OS device with a 1.5GHz processor.

Only hours ago ViewSonic revealed the 10pro model, offering both Windows and Android in the same 10.1 inch package. This model relies on an Atom Z670 processor, the 1.5GHz unit we mentioned, made by Intel and with an impressive power consumption, that grants the slate 8 hours with a single charge. The ViewPad 10pro will come with Windows 7 Professional and Android 2.3, plus 32GB SSD, with a price of $699.

Windows 7 Home Premium, Android 2.3 and a 16GB SSD will bring the price down to $599 and the device is expected in shops later this month. Other things worth mentioning are the ability to play full HD 1080p video, a resolution of 1024 x 600 pixels and 2GB of integrated memory.
