Install Android 3.2 Honeycomb With Android Market on Your ASUS Eee PC or Laptop

This image has no alt text

There’s a little open source project going on called Android-x86 that aims to get Android up and running on your laptop or desktop PC. The results so far? Almost fully functional builds of Android 3.2 Honeycomb booting on a various netbooks and laptops.

The process involves downloading the Android ISO then using UNetbootin to install the image to a USB stick or SD card. After that, you’ll have Honeycomb up and running on your PC. Most of the PC hardware like WiFi is working just fine and they’ve even managed to get the Android Market installed. Must of the luck users have been experiencing is with ASUS branded PC’s but there have been reports of others working with a few glitches.

I would imagine Ice Cream Sandwich development will pick up steam now that the source for Android 4.0 has been released. If you want to give Honeycomb a spin on your PC, hit up the source link for downloads and further instructions. I’ve included the video below of one user who got Android 3.2 booted up on his Eee PC netbook. Cool stuff.

Qualcomm Pulls an NVIDIA, Announces GameCommand Highlight App for Snapdragon Devices

This image has no alt text

As you know, Qualcomm is beginning to move faster than ever in the chipset race. They already have a number of devices with dual-core processors inside and quad-core SoCs are right around the corner. Their chipsets are quite capable of handling the latest video games and Qualcomm wants you to know that and wants to help you tap the power of it.

They’ve announced GameCommand, something not too much unlike NVIDIA’s TegraZone application. It highlights the many games optimized for Qualcomm’s processors. It’s a bit of an extension of their GamePack program except this one is geared more toward users and easy discoverability.

To start, they’ll be showcasing a number of PC games ported to Android that will exclusively work only on Snapdragon powered devices initially. The titles will eventually hit the Android market after their brief periods of exclusivity.

This type of showcasing is great for both Qualcomm and their publishing partners, but it’s still not great for consumers. You could have the most powerful chipset in the world in your phone, but you might not be able to play a game you want because it’s not “optimized” for anything but Qualcomm chipsets. Fragmented gaming is what it is. That’s another story for another day, though.  Read on for full press details.

NEW YORK - November 16, 2011 - Qualcomm Incorporated (NASDAQ: QCOM) today announced today the expansion of its 100+ games Snapdragon GamePack and launch of a new showcase application -- Snapdragon™ GameCommand™ -- further bolstering the supply of console-quality and casual games for mobile devices featuring Snapdragon processors.

The new gaming titles being introduced as part of the extended Snapdragon GamePack and the new Snapdragon GameCommand app are all expected to hit the Android Market in early 2012. Additions to the Snapdragon GamePack include several new, exclusive gaming titles that will be available through the Android Market, and which will initially be designed to operate exclusively on Android-enabled devices powered by Snapdragon processors. These titles include a number of high-end PC games, such as:

• "The Ball" from Tripwire Interactive, which has earned several accolades including PC Gamer’s 2010 Action-Adventure Game of the Year, is built on Epic Games’ Unreal Engine 3 and is debuting for the first time ever on mobile
• "Fight Game Heroes" from Khaeon Gamestudio
• "GALAGA Special Edition," the 30th anniversary edition of the perennial arcade favorite from NAMCO BANDAI Games.

While the GamePack is an ever-growing collection of great games, the new Snapdragon GameCommand app provides mobile users a way to quickly find and learn about the latest Snapdragon featured and exclusive games, with the added bonus of being able to keep and access all their favorite games in a single place with one group icon. The Snapdragon GameCommand app also provides gamers with a source for the latest gaming news from some of the most popular gaming news sites.

"Qualcomm has received great user feedback since launching the Snapdragon GamePack, so we are expanding the quantity and quality of games while making them easier to locate through the launch of the Snapdragon GameCommand app," says Raj Talluri, vice president of product management at Qualcomm. "With more than 60 percent of smartphone users regularly playing games on their mobile devices, the time is right to bring more console-quality and casual games to the Snapdragon platform. We are very excited to put our new Snapdragon GameCommand app and more great gaming titles in the hands of consumers in early 2012."

The Snapdragon GamePack, launched in June 2011 at Qualcomm’s Uplinq® mobile developer conference, originally featured more than 100 game titles from some of the industry’s top game development companies, including Advanced Mobile Applications Ltd., Babaroga LLC, Booyah Inc., Com2us USA Inc., Digital Chocolate Inc., Electronic Arts Inc., Eyelead Software S.A., FISHLABS Entertainment GmbH, Glu Mobile Inc., Guild Software Inc., Gameloft Inc., Khaeon Games BV, NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc., NaturalMotion Games Ltd., Polarbit AB, PopCap Games Inc., HandyGames, Southend Interactive, and Tripwire Interactive LLC. Qualcomm worked closely with them to utilize the advanced graphics capability of the embedded Adreno® GPUs in Snapdragon mobile processors and bring a better gaming experience to mobile users.

"We waited to enter the mobile market until we could bring a top-of-the-line PC game experience to mobile devices," said Alan Wilson, vice president of Tripwire Interactive. "Snapdragon processors now give us the power to do that."

"We are looking forward to the launch of the Snapdragon GameCommand app, which will bring our Snapdragon-optimized games directly to consumers and help to eliminate the search process," said Didier Pippel of Khaeon Gamestudio. "Android has emerged as a prominent medium for gaming, and we are excited to work with Qualcomm to give gamers the mobile experience they deserve."

"We have been able to maximize the advanced Adreno graphics in our premium 3D games like ‘PAC-MAN Kart Rally,’" said Carlson Choi, vice president of marketing, NAMCO BANDAI Games America Inc. "Our developers and producers are enthusiastically working with Qualcomm’s gaming team to continue to expand the Snapdragon GamePack by bringing some of the industry’s top franchises to the new platform."

HP TouchPad Go is a 7 Inch WebOS Tablet… WTF HP?

HP is possibly the most undecided company ever, since they’ve been going back and forth on their decision to give up the TouchPad and the entire PC business for that matter. Now, after the10 inch TouchPad WebOS tablet seems history, here we are with a 7 inch model, so one can’t help but ask… WTF HP?!

This 7 inch unit is called the TouchPad Go and it’s powered by WebOS, but there’s something you must know: this product will never make it to the market. Back in August HP decided to give up on WebOS and they’re still going that way, so sorry guys. What you see here is a product that could have been mildly popular, if it would have been priced right.

The pics come from Chinese website Palm Joy and this looks like a 4:3 aspect ratio device, looking very much like the 10 inch brethren, maybe a bit thinner. The Home button is on the long side now and this model is 3G capable and supports a 1024 x 768 pixel resolution. All of these are irrelevant, considering we’ll never see the product on the market.

Keep in mind that HP has left over units of the TouchPad Go, around 100k units to be more precise. Will they do another fire sale of the 1.5GHz Snapdragon slate, with 32GB of memory, 5MP back camera and NFC?

HTC quad-core tablet possible for early 2012

MWC announcement?
HTC quad-core tablet possible for early 2012. HTC, Tablets, Rumours, Android 0

Reports have come out that HTC will be launching a powerful quad-core tablet early next year (2012), and if true, will hopefully use high-spec to entice customers to its wares.

The news comes out of Digitimes, who reports that along with the new tablet, HTC will also be launching two new phones - though the fact that a massive mobile manufacturer will be launching phones at MWC 2012 doesn't exactly come as a surprise.

What is interesting, however, if the report is true, is that this HTC news, as well as the Asus Transformer Prime announcement and Lenovo 10-inch tab rumour, perhaps marks the start of a true PC-spec within a tablet. And if the OS is right, then tablets could start being able to perform similar tasks, especially work-orientated tasks, to a PC. This is clearly the aim of the Asus Transformer Prime with its keyboard dock.

Quad cores should also make for a less sluggish experience when multitasking and may also help with battery life.

It is suggested that the HTC quad-core tablet will launch before the release of IE8, so certainly before the fourth quarter. Mobile World Congress is therefore a likely candidate, however we may get a sniff at CES in January.

ASUS Transformer Prime Hands-on Reveals Beautiful Device (Video)

The ASUS Transformer Prime quad core tablet has been barely announced and already there’s an interesting hands on experience out there to glance at. Furthermore, this clip published below shows us the gaming ability of the slate. The product was announced on the 9th of this month, so that’s just days ago.

Last I heard, this model was delayed for launch till December, but don’t take that for granted. The Prime is expected to improve on its predecessor in every aspect, especially battery life, that is supposed to be an incredible 18 hours, with the keyboard dock included. The folks of ZTOP were lucky enough to score this Tegra 3 newcomer and take it for a spin, with the result being the hands on video below.

In it we can see a third person shooter called Shadowgun, that actually looks good enough to compete with the PC games from 4-5 years ago. Since the source of the pics and video is from Brasil, it claims that the product will come to the country in the first quarter of 2012 and the pricing will be $499 just like we’ve heard it will in the USA, for the basic 32GB WiFI unit. Will you purchase one of these Kal-El CPU wonders?

Bridea Corp Bringing Renaissance Themed MMOFPS “DaVinci Online” To Tegra 3 Devices

Good ‘ol fashioned MMOFPS’s (massive multiplayer online first-person shooter) are hard to come by. Whether it’s for your console, PC or mobile device — it may be hard to think of one off the top of your head. Korean game developer, Bridea, has been hard at work making their own MMOFPS titled DaVinci Online. The game, formerly known as Project Renaissance (or Project R), is currently slated for an early 2012 release for the PC and it seems the Korean developer may have plans to bring their renaissance themed FPS to Android as well. More specifically, Nvidia Tegra 3 devices. Bridea’s VP and Executive Producer Kijong Kang was quoted in Nvidia’s Tegra 3 press release saying,

“Working with NVIDIA makes the impossible possible. Our Tegra 3 optimized game DaVinci THD will look brilliant when it comes out, with mind-blowing 3D graphics and intuitive touchscreen interface. DaVinci THD will leverage Tegra 3 for its multi-threading capabilities, so we can scale across all four CPU cores and deliver the ultimate console-quality performance. As a result, DaVinci THD will be more realistic, interactive and challenging than anything we’ve done before.”

Davinci Online is a fantasy based online first-person shooter powered by the Unreal 3 engine that takes place in a renaissance-ish time period with advanced steam-punk guns and melee weapons. Players will be able to battle it out player-vs-player style in different locales found in old Europe like Milan, Florence, Sicily, Istanbul and more. Davinci Online’s graphics are highly detailed and bring a unique art style to the normally drab FPS genre. While there aren’t too many videos of the game online, there was one we found to give you an idea of what to look forward to.

The only question that now remains is how much content from the PC version Bridea will be able to port over when DaVinci Online is released for Android. Let’s hope it’s a faithful port with the core-gameplay and graphics remaining mostly intact for the most part. I’m curious to see how the Tegra 3 processor will be able to be able to handle the load without melting the device it’s running on. What did you guys think? Excited for some good, renaissance, FPS gaming on your ASUS Transformer Prime?
