7 Inch Tablets to Stand for 60% of White Box Models in 2011

DigiTimes has been reporting that 7 inch tablet models will stand for 60% of output in 2011. The “fault” for this trend belongs to Chinese manufacturers, who are fond of this format. Next in line on the popularity scale there’s the 8.9 inch model, at 15% and the 9.7 inch model at 10%.

Research proves that in China consumers take the price as an important factor in purchase, so 7 inch models become more popular this way. This means that Dell’s 10 inch Streak 10 Pro slate is destined to fail, since it was announced for China recently. We expect those white box tablets mentioned to hit Europe and the US soon enough and they might make a dent in the iPad’s market share, especially with the proper pricing.

Samsung Preparing 7 Inch Super AMOLED Screens for Tablets

Samsung recently announced that it’s preparing 7 inch Super AMOLED screens for slates, that could spawn the next generation of Apple iPad rivals in 2011. Super AMOLED displays can be found right now on Galaxy S handsets and they’re pretty impressive to see in action. They support deep blacks, vibrant colors and work decently in sunlight.

The 7 inch Super AMOLED displays that are being developed right now support 1200 x 600 pixel resolutions, making some great tablet screens. Some hope that the future version of the Samsung Galaxy Tab will sport such a display, but nothing’s for sure yet. It’s said that the 7 inch Super AMOLED units will hit the market late next year, at earliest.

Meanwhile, we remember that Apple CEO Steve Jobs dismissed 7 inch tablets recently, saying that they’re not fit to compete with smartphones or 10 inch slates. It could be a bluff, as the Cupertino giant prepares a 7 inch slate of its own…

RIM’s Co-CEO Responds to Steve Jobs Irony on 7 Inch Slates

Jim Balsillie, RIM co-CEO replied to Steve Jobs’ critique concerning 7 inch slates, saying that the Apple CEO’s remarks make no sense outside the Cupertino giant’s “distortion field”. We remind you that Jobs said that 7 inch tablets are tweeners and nobody wants a bigger smartphone or a slate that’s smaller than 10 inches.

Also, Apple’s main man called all 7 inch tablets and pretty much every tablet rivaling the iPad “dead on arrival”. Of course, Jobs also mentioned that the iPhone sales have finally overtaken the sales of BlackBerry handsets. Jim Balsillie is convinced that 7 inch tablets have a chance of making up a big portion of the portable PC market in the future.

As far as the sold iPhones versus BlackBerry units issue is concerned, RIM’s official claimed that the two companies have different endings for fiscal quarters, so they really can’t compare figures yet. Apparently, the demand in September is stronger than in summer months, but we doubt that RIM will catch up to the 14.1 million iPhones sold by Apple in Q4. RIM shipped 12.1 million BlackBerrys over the last quarter.

Steve Jobs Dismisses 7 Inch iPad, Attacks Rival Tablets

Just as Apple revealed its stunning financial results, Steve Jobs took his time and attacked the other tablet makers. Also, Apple’s boss dismissed once and for all the rumors concerning the 7 inch iPad. In case you didn’t know, Apple shipped over 4.1 million iPad units over the last quarter, so it’s got some solid ground to talk about slates.

Jobs considers seven inch tablets “tweeners” and he’s sure that they can’t compete with the iPad, since they’re basically bigger phones. Also, Apple’s guru considers 7 inch slates dead from the start, specially if they have Android 2.2 on board, an OS that even Google deemed unfit for tablets. Gingerbread will change the game, but Apple’s CEO is quite right with all his claims.

Continuing to speak on these matters, Jobs mentioned that he sees Android as a fragmented experience, while iOS is not a closed platform, but rather an “integrated experience”. We’ll possibly hear some replies from tablet makers to match his harsh words over the next days.
