Android Tablets Now Have 30% Market Share, In Spite of iPad Domination

With the iPad ruling the tablet segment for many months now, Android had all the time it needed to sneak up on its rival and snatch a hefty portion of the market. Strategy Analytics has a recent report showing that the Android slates have managed to reach 30% of the tablet market.

Not so long ago, the Apple iPad had 93% of the segment and Android slates were placed at 3%. With the aid of devices such as the Galaxy Tab and its follow-up, plus the Motorola Xoom and the incredibly well selling ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, it has come to this. Google’s mobile OS has a long way to go till it beats the iPad, but it’s on the right track.

For one, Android has more tablet makers on its side, while the iPad only has… Apple. Then there’s the lack of Honeycomb-specific apps, that’s something most users are complaining about, especially since the iPad already has a bunch of applications dedicated to it. With ASUS now shipping 400k Transformer units a month, the battle with Apple is about to get nasty…

Android tablets to overtake iPad within 3 years

According to Nvidia boss

There were reports doing the rounds at the end of last week that Nvidia boss Jen-Hsun Huang wasn't happy with the Android tablet sales figures, with the CEO stating that the lack of take-up was down to a "sales problem", an "expertise at retail problem", a "marketing problem" and a "price point problem".

But that doesn't mean that Huang has lost hope with the platform. Far from it - he sees Android tablets beating the competition from Cupertino within 3 years.

"The Android phone took only two and a half years to achieve the momentum that we're talking about. I would expect the same thing on Honeycomb tablets," Huang told Reuters.

Huang pointed out that Android's growth could come down to the advance in chipsets, such as his company's next-gen mobile set up, the quad-core processor codenamed Kal-El.

The Nvidia boss said that there are already "at least 10" devices with "five major phone companies and we have five major PC (manufacturers)" in the pipeline for the platform, which was first revealed at MWC.

During the demo, Nvidia showed it off by running a prototype device boasting 1440p video playback running on a 2560x1600 panel.

Big numbers indeed, and the sort of wow factor that Android tablets will need going forward if it is to knock the iPad off of its perch.

Nvidia CEO Blames High Tablet Prices for Low Android Slate Sales

NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Juang, the guy you can see right here with the tattoo recently explained his theory concerning the poor sales of Android tablets. Apparently, the price is the one to blame, so cheaper models are needed. With iPad the dominant product in this segment, it’s hard to come up with a competitive product these days.

Just look at how bad the first Honeycomb tablet Motorola Xoom failed, since according to analysts this model sold at best 120,000 units and at worst 25,000. Nvidia is the maker of the Tegra SOC solution that powers the Xoom, so it has all the reasons to speak up. The company’s frustrations include the lack of expertise at retail, lack of proper marketing and proper pricing.

Right now Motorola Xoom costs $599 in the most basic version, compared to the ASUS Eee Pad Transformer, at $399 and the iPad 2 at $499, both in the base version. Huang says that tablet makers should focus on WiFi only slates, that are more affordable and he also reminds everyone of the very few Honeycomb apps out there…

Android Tablet Sales to Equal the iPad’s Figures in Second Half of 2011

Apple iPad’s supremacy in the tablet segment is not going to last that long, according to analysts who kept an eye on CES 2011 and its huge number of Android tablets. These devices are the trendiest thing in the tech world right now and according to the analysts at BMO Capital Markets, the Android-based slates will match the sales of the iPad in H2 2011.

The experts also claim that Apple’s product will continue to lead the tablets, but that won’t be happening for such a long time. Android has the advantage of many hardware manufacturers launching slates with this OS on board this year, while Apple has to deal with competition by itself. Among the brands quoted by BMO there are ASUS, Fujitsu, HP, HTC, MSI, Motorola and Lenovo.

25 to 30 tablets are expected by mid-year, all of them with the major advantage of Flash support, unlike the iPad. BMO estimates that 15 to 16 million slate units were sold last year, 13 million of them belonging to Apple, although the Cupertino giant didn’t disclose the iPad sales for the past months.

Honeycomb, the next version of Android will drive the growth of the slates rivaling the iPad and this summer will certainly prove to be an interesting one…
