Dell Streak Receives Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread update

Dell Streak owners, rejoice! Turns out that you’ve been waiting for Gingerbread for a while now, but there’s a workaround available to get it. We’re talking about StreakDroid, an unofficial build of Android 2.2 that was developed by DJ_Steve. Well, StreakDroid now includes Android 2.3.3 Gingerbread features in the newest version.

The software has reached version 2.0 and it borrows heavily from Gingerbread and Honeycomb, with the latter providing stuff like the keyboard and music player. Some features are still lacking from this build and graphics performance could use improvement, but that’s certainly better than sitting and waiting for the official update, right?

Dell Streak Clone Runs Android 2.3 Gingerbread, Costs $200

Dubbed the WELLDONE tablet PC, this device is a Dell Streak clone that makes phone calls and is priced at about $200. The handset packs a 1.2GHz Cortex A8 CPU, 512MB of memory and a 3000mAh battery. There’s also HDMI out (via optional dock) and the slate’s screen is a 7 inch WVGA resistive touchscreen.

This is a Chinese slate, looking exactly like the Dell Streak, if you ignore the 7 inch screen. The shipped cost for it is $216, with shipping taking place through DHL. The CPU, Gingerbread and phone call ability sound pretty good and might appeal to some public segment, but for this price you can probably get a really good deal on a smartphone with a contract.

Dell Streak Going for a Mere $100 at Best Buy

Best Buy has a record offer this month, selling the Dell Streak slate for a mere $100. The offer is available with a 2 year contract and it’s certainly much more appealing than the $300 you have to pay for the device on an AT&T contract. $549 is the cost of the device, if you’re not fond of commitments.

There are plenty of reasons to buy the Streak, like the widescreen display it incorporates, excellent for mobile web, video and movies. Social networking is also supported on this device, that relies on a very resilient Gorilla glass screen to display content.

Android is running the show on the slate and we wonder if the device will receive Android 2.3 Gingerbread at some point next year. Multitasking and Google Maps with navigation are the two final reasons for getting this baby, specially for $100.

Dell Streak White Flavor Poses For the Camera

Best Buy recently started selling the exclusive white version of the Dell Streak slate across the US, but the device is only available for in-store pickup at this moment. You can reserve and pay for it online, if you want to get this out of the way. Meanwhile, we have some shots of the device, so that you know what you’re getting for the money you pay.

The white Android slate comes with a silvery finish and very much the same specs of the darker version. This 5 inch unit recently received the Froyo update, as you might already know and the last thing we heard from Dell “Streak-wise”, what the company was preparing a follow-up for 2011.
