Samurai vs Zombies Defense Comes To Android – Blood, Gore, and The Undead In Feudal Japan

This image has no alt text

Sometimes, I feel like maybe I’m a little too easy to please. Throw a badass samurai hero hacking away at zombies in feudal Japan and I’m all-in. And I’m sure that’s exactly what Glu Mobile was banking on after publishing Samurai vs Zombies Defense into the Android Market today. Yeah, I’ll give it to them. I’m a sucker. But really, SvZD is actually pretty good. You take control of a hero character whom you can control by either moving right or left, as he auto-attacks the onslaught of Japanese zombies spewing forth from hell’s evil portal.

Less of an action game, and more along the lines of tower defense, your main character can be upgraded in variety of ways from his defense, attack strength or magic abilities, or you can chose to spend all your hard-earned cash on a variety of upgrades for your allies and/or tower. There’s even a few mini games thrown into the mix that rewards the player with rare items and bonus cash.

The game looks great, plays well and if you can get passed the sometimes annoying prompts for in-app purchases (it is a freemium title after all), I think you’ll have some fun with it too. You can find Samurai vs Zombies Defense for free, right now on Google Play. Come back and let me know what you think of it.

Final Fantasy III Is Finally Available For Android Devices (In Japan)

This image has no alt text

I can’t even begin to tell you how many countless hours I dedicated to Final Fantasy III on my Nintendo DS and after finding itself ported to the iPhone last year, Square Enix has finally, finally, decided to bring the 3D remake to Android devices but there’s only one small problem… you better brush up on your Japanese. Currently, the title is only available for Android devices in Japan and hasn’t yet been translated to English.

There’s no telling when — if at all — we’ll see Final Fantasy localized for us here in the states, but for now, we can only dream of the day dancing Chocobos and flying Moogles will grace our devices with their presence. Lord knows we could use some decent turn-based JRPG’s in the Market. Make it happen, Squenix!

Check out the iPhone launch trailer to see the much improved visuals over the Nintendo DS version.

Keek for Android Updated With New Features and Enhancements

This image has no alt text

It wasn’t too long ago I told you guys about a fun video sharing service called Keek that focused on short, 30 second status update videos for sharing across multiple social networking site. Initially when I tried it out a few months ago, aside from being the oldest user on Keek, it was a tad buggy and some features found on their site, weren’t available in their app. But with today’s update, it seems they’ve changed much of those gripes along with adding much needed bug fixes and device compatibility. Here’s what’s new from Keek since I last visited it:

  • Watch Keeks from other users
  • Post text comments and “Keekbacks”
  • Follow and subscribe to other users
  • View profiles, following and subscribers
  • Search for Keeks and people
  • Share Keeks on Facebook, Twitter & Tumblr
  • Edit your Keeks and captions
  • Coming soon: My stream, Keekmail, private Keeks and more coming soon!

The developers also mentioned that a couple of new features are in the works like My Stream, Keekmail and private Keeks for you kinky little users out there. Again, the point of Keek is just to watch and post short video clips to let the people in your life know what you’re up to and what you’re thinking.. or you can just show everyone how cute Mr. Whiskers is being today. Here’s a quick video I shot today trying it out and the Google Play link can be found below.

Facebook for Android Update Lands in Play Store

This image has no alt text

Facebook for Android has gotten a new update today. No changelog accompanied the upload unfortunately, but we can assume that the changes don’t extend far beyond the usual round of bug fixes. Nothing seems to be broken with the update, either. Oh, and none of the fixes are noticeable to us just yet. Head to the Google Play Store for the upgrade if you dare.

Readability for Android Now Available

This image has no alt text

For those looking for a good web-page reader, consider an application which just launched exclusively (in the US, anyway) on the Amazon Appstore. The device turns web pages into easy-to-read formats so you can get past all the stuff you don’t care about. It saves you time, data (and, through extension, money), and more importantly, headaches. It’s free to download but you’ll have to load the Amazon Appstore on your phone. Those outside of the US can head to the Google Play Store for their download as Amazon Appstore is not currently available for you. [Amazon Appstore Link]

Official NCAA March Madness app comes to Android

This image has no alt text

It’s that time of year again. Spring is in the air and some of the best college athletes the in the country are on the courts as the nation prepares to go mad for March Madness. The yearly NCAA basketball tournament tips off this week and runs for the rest of the month, and Android owners can catch every minute of it right on their smartphones. The official app of the tourney, NCAA March Madness Live, is now available, bringing live radio coverage of all 67 games to be played, game alerts, and social interactions. Useers can even fill out your own bracket and predict the big winner.

The free version of the app provides schedules for catching all the games on TV, but for a $3.99 in-app fee the college showdowns can be streamed directly to your handset as well as game highlights and live-streamed team practices leading up to the Final Four. One drawback is that these video features are only available on Froyo and Gingerbread devices at this time. The app also is not compatible with tablets, so it’s the small screen or bust. Head over to Google Play to grab the download now.

Instagram reaches 27 million registered users, Android app on its way and “better than the iPhone app”

This image has no alt text

Instagram has taken the stage at SXSW, today. One of the main announcements was that the popular picture sharing iOS app has just reached 27 million registered users, with a whopping 67% of them using the app just yesterday. But that was not the only good news. Co-founder Kevin Systrom disclosed a bit of the upcoming Instagram Android app, mentioning that “in some ways, it is better than their iOS app.”

Systrom went on to give users a quick preview of the app by flashing it to the public, running in a Galaxy Nexus. But a full-demo was not given, as this app is now under private beta. But it should not be too long before us Android users can get in on the picture-sharing fun.

We may be wondering what took such a large developer so long. Instagram was launched in the fall of 2010, and we have been hearing of it coming to Android since that year. After multiple updates and leaks, we continue to wait. It has been almost 2 years, and there are chances that the delay will reach that threshold before Instagram makes it to Android devices. Here is what Kevin has to say about the matter:

"I don’t think it took us so long. We just had priorities. Had we tried to be both on Android and iPhone at the same time, it would’ve been tough to innovate in the way that we have."

Instagram was trying to build up its fame with iOS, instead of rushing things and working on both operating systems. The team believes that they can create a better service by taking its time to make a quality product. But with a good product and customer base, Instagram now claims to be ready for the Android ecosystem.

Regardless, the app should be hitting the Google Play Store soon. And with such a high adoption rate on iOS, that 27 million number should be increasing very quickly once the little green robot gets its hands on it.

How many of you have been waiting for the Instagram app to reach Android? Will you be using the app?

Video: Angry Birds Space demo at SXSW

This image has no alt text

Rovio and Samsung are showing off the upcoming Angry Birds Space game at SXSW. And while there are some good videos out there, The Verge has just posted one of the best hands-on demo videos for this game.

This is the latest iteration of Angry Birds, with an interesting spin and different physics approach. The game takes place in outer space and makes use of gravitational force to beat those pesky green pigs. One may become used to the different perspecitve after a while. But it sure looks like it needs some getting used to, as Ross Miller mentions.

The game was done in collaboration with NASA, which also put together a neat tutorial video straight from the International Space Station. If you are waiting for this game to land, we already know that it will be released come March 22nd (for all platforms).

It might also be important to note that Galaxy Note users will be able to play it for free, for three months. The rest of us will have to spare some bucks in order to fling those birds out of this world. But let’s just sit back and watch Ross take us through a quick demo of Angry Birds Space, while we wait.
