Google to Launch Sub $200 7 Inch Ice Cream Sandwich Tablet as Amazon Kindle Fire Rival

Not so long ago, Eric Schmidt from Google was heard saying that the search engine giant is preparing a tablet of its own and now it appears that fresh details about the device have surfaced. Google is apparently aiming at an Amazon Kindle Fire rival, so they’ll price their slate around the $200 mark. The result will be an affordable Android Ice Cream Sandwich 7 inch table that will come in Q2 2012, according to Digitimes.

Ever since 2010 Google saw the Apple iPad as its main rival on the tablet market, but now Amazon Kindle Fire seems to have taken on the role as one of the threatening figures in the tablet segment. Honeycomb failed to get enough traction and so did the tablets with this OS on board, so if Ice Cream Sandwich wants to change something, it will also need some top notch hardware and a great price to compete with its rivals.

Google might release its tablet in March or April, packed with Ice Cream Sandwich and featuring a 7 inch screen, plus a lower price tag than $200, undermining the Kindle Fire. It’s strange to hear that Google, the maker of Android, an OS available on the Kindle Fire feel threatened by a company that after all it’s using their OS. It will be interesting to see if the search engine giant chooses Motorola to build its slate, as rumored, or if it’s another company. Frankly, I’m afraid by Motorola getting chosen, since their Xoom and the newer slates didn’t impress me at all…

Kindle Fire’s Silk Browser Hacked onto Other Android Devices

This image has no alt text

One of the best features of the Amazon Kindle Fire is its Silk browser, which uses the cloud to assist in rendering web pages for a smooth as butter browsing experience. It’s an advantage Amazon would like to keep exclusive to their hardware, but the hard-working devs of the XDA Developers forum have freed the software from its tablet prison. Thanks to a bit of hacking, the Silk browser is now installable on most rooted Android devices, including the likes of the Motorola Atrix and Droid X. As with most unofficial hacks, consider it a sort of proof-of-concept, but if you have been wanting to check out Silk without buying the $200 Kindle Fire, here’s your chance.

USA Today Brings App to Amazon Kindle Fire

This image has no alt text

USA Today has already been available for Android but, as we know, the Kindle Fire is different. They’ve heavily customized Android 2.3.x and, as such, the tablet-specific apps designed with Android 3.0+ SDKs can’t work. It’s up to application developers to bring apps that take advantage of the Kindle Fire’s screen real estate, though, and USA Today has done just that with their new application. It’s a free download but be prepared to see some ads throughout your daily perusal of their content. Grab the download at Amazon’s Appstore here. [via AndroidGuys]

Android 4.0 Running on Amazon Kindle Fire in Early Version, Filled With Bugs (Video)

After several attempts at porting the latest Android version to the Amazon Kindle Fire, we finally get some decent results, that are shown in action in the video below. By “decent” I mean an early build with bugs that serves as excuse to brag that you have ICS on your $200 dual core tablet shipping with Gingerbread.

Developer JackpotClavin is behind this initiative, having released the early build of Android 4.0 for the Kindle Fire. The software is based on CyanogenMod 9 and it’s filled with bugs. The release is rather one for developers than the general public and even the audio doesn’t work, as well as the video functions. Graphics glitches are present, but if you fancy such tweaks, the instructions for installing Ice Cream Sandwich on the Amazon Kindle Fire are available here.

There’s video proof of the alpha build running on the slate immediately after the break. CyganodenMod 9 will also bring the Android 4.0 action to other tablets soon, hopefully with less glitches than this release. For now, the $199 tablet is worth every buck with such tweaks…

After 6.2.1 Update, Amazon’s Kindle Fire Re-Rooted

This image has no alt text

After the latest update broke the root method established for the Amazon Kindle Fire, it was back to square one. For some this meant having to decide between the officially updated software or the older (but more open) rooted version. If the decision was causing fits for some, they can put their minds at ease. The 6.2.1 update has been cracked and root is once again attainable on the latest version of the Amazon Kindle Fire firmware. Head on over to the source link below to get all the info and an easy one-click method to get the job done.

Nook Tablet Update Kills Root and App Side Loading, But there’s a Fix

Bad news all around for people who rooted their Amazon Kindle Fire and their Nook Tablet units… First there was an update that messed with the customization of the Kindle Fire and now the Nook Tablet update kills the root and sideloading of apps. However, at least in the case of the Nook Tablet there’s something you can do about it.

Most of users have software versions 1.4.0 now and if you accept the update, you’ll reach version 1.4.1 instead. The easy way is not to update and you’ll keep your root and maybe even that sweet ROM with Android Ice Cream Sandwich included, if you want to risk trying unstable software. However, if you already accepted the update and now you miss the sideloading of apps, all you need to do is roll back to version 1.4.0 and everything will be peachy again.

The folks of XDA Developers have a simple method of doing this, as developer Adam Outler was keen on informing everyone. The solution is called “magic SD card” and Adam simply put the stock 1.4.0 factory image in a update.zip and set up all the needed stuff to get the older software in place. All you need to do is download the 1.4.0 software, put it on the SD card, insert it and choose a factory restore of the Nook Tablet. Of course, this wipes the user data, but after you’re back to 1.4.0 you can keep the root access…

Amazon Kindle Fire Gets Software Update – Available Now, Breaking Root

If you own an Amazon Kindle Fire you might want to know that software version 6.2.1 is rolling out for your slate now, but there are a couple of things to know about it. For one, the update removes the root from the device and it will make it impossible to re-root the unit with SuperOneClick utility… isn’t that sad?

Amazon must have patched up the ability to root the tablet, at least temporarily. If you’re all about rooting you can avoid connecting to the WiFi network and that’s about it. There’s always the option of installing CyanogenMod, that prevents official auto updates from Amazon, if you’re paranoid. Back to the legit side of things, software version 6.2.1 brings smoother scrolling, passworded protected WiFi access and the option to remove recently used items from the carousel.

Of course, if you want to use custom ROMs you can do it, but there are dangers and bugs associated to such initiatives. Some people out there are buying Kindle Fire hoping that some Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich ROM will come and end their painful experience with the Gingerbread + Amazon layer.

Happy Holidroid Contest: Secret Image Challenge [Hanukkah Edition]

This image has no alt text

If you’re unsure what this whole "Holidroid Contest" thing is all about, be prepared to get excited. From November 24th through December 25th, Phandroid is giving away a Kindle Fire every single day along with other great prizes like the Galaxy Nexus Galaxy Tabs, JAMBOX, SmarTouch Gloves, Android Phones, Android T-Shirts, Seidio Vouchers and more. Read our announcement post for details.

Yesterday’s Winner

Yesterday we asked you to answer a Phandroid trivia question. Hung V. was the first to correctly identify Chris Chavez’s Labyrinth score at Google I/O. It was 3. Congratulations to Hung who will receive a number of great prizes. For the rest of you, here is a look at what could be won today:

Amazon Kindle Fire

The Kindle Fire could be this holiday’s hottest product: at only $199 it’s not only one of the most  affordable Android tablets, it’s also one of the best. That’s a killer combination. With a beautiful UI, great battery life, carefully curated apps/games, and an amazing array of media options thanks to Amazon’s Digital Content Ecosystem... the Kindle Fire is a sure win. Good luck winning one in our contest, but at only $199 it’s probably worth buying one just in case!

Sony Tablet S

Sony’s penchant for excellently styled hardware meets the functionality of Android 3.0 to create a top notch tablet experience. The focus here is on media and gaming, and access to Sony’s PlayStation Suite along with the ability to control other home entertainment devices via the Tablet S make it a great living room companion. Powered by the dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor, Sony’s slate can handle just about anything you throw at it.

Isotoner SmarTouch Gloves

Every single holiday season these SmarTouch smartphone gloves are consistently one of my favorite gift giving items. They eloquently solve one of the most fundamental problems a tech lover faces: using your device in cold weather. Wearing gloves usually prevents your touchscreen from working: take your phone out, take your glove off, use your phone, hand gets gold, shove phone in pocket, rush to get glove on. NO MORE! Isotoner’s SmarTouch gloves, designed in my colors and sizes for both men and women, has technology that passes the electrons your body gives off, through the gloves, onto the capacitive screen and allowing it to work. VOILA! Seriously. It works. Trust me. Try it... and you’ll love them forever.

ZeeMote Bluetooth Game Controller

The Zeemote Bluetooth Game Controller compacts things into one comfortable, ergonomically sound gaming package. You use one hand and the controller has an analog stick with four action buttons on it. It’s a bit reminiscent of a Nintendo Wiimote – makes you wonder where the name was inspired from. There are many games in the Android Market already compatible with the Zeemote, including the popular title R-Type, and you may even be able to use it with some of your emulators. It goes perfectly with many Android devices, from 3.2 inch phones to 10.1 inch tablets. And if you want the ultimate gaming experience, Zeemote + Phone/Tablet + TV + HDMI-out = awesome.

Seidio $30 Voucher

With so much smartphone use comes battery drain. Thankfully, Seidio makes some awesome extended batteries that fit many smartphones, allowing you to get longer battery life with the same device. No more toting around a charger everywhere you go: just snag a Seidio and call it a day! Seidio also makes cases, holsters, and other great accessories for your smartphones.Check them all out here.
