iPad 2 to Feature a Dual-Core CPU

After checking out some casings that were supposedly built for the iPad 2, we learn that the next-gen Apple tablet will be based on a dual-core chip. This will be a first for the Cupertino giant, but it’s a necessary step to take, especially since Motorola is readying both a slate and a smartphone based on Nvidia’s Tegra 2 chipset (dual core).

Also, RIM’s PlayBook tablet is a dual-core unit, so competition is getting fierce, at this point. The ideal option for the iPad 2 is a dual-core processor with a couple of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores, according to a research note released by Ashok Kumar, Rodman & Renshaw analyst. This will finally enable PC-like multitasking on the new device, thanks to the dual cores.

The iPhone is also likely to get a CPU upgrade of this kind, but don’t get your hopes up before we hear anything at CES 2011.
