Google, Motorola Suffer Prolonged Period of Acquisition Investigation by China

This image has no alt text

When Google and Motorola originally announced plans for the former to buy the latter for $12 billion, they anticipated being able to close the deal before the first quarter of 2012 was over. We saw pretty much every antitrust regulation committee from pretty much every relevant country approve the deal, but China wasn’t so fast to pull the trigger on the red ink pen.

Unfortunately, we’re still not sure how long that’ll take. Motorola has sent a filing to the SEC informing them that China has prolonged their investigation of the proposed acquisition and must now move their target to the first half of 2012.

Even then, they’re not ready to guarantee even a sizable window for China to approve the deal. We’re sure they’re anxious to get this deal closed but they’re simply going to have to wait. [via Light Reading]

Flashout 3D is a Music-Infused Twist on Wipeout

This image has no alt text

While my fondness for futuristic racers, such as Wipeout, has long faded, developers JuJubee S.A. might pull me in with their take on the genre. They’ve introduced a game called Flashout 3D, a graphically rich racer with bonuses and power-ups, online multiplayer, and a lot more. One big feature in that “a lot more” category are the music-enabled visuals.

The world around you will bump and move with the music playing. This feature isn’t exclusive to the in-game music JuJuBee’s provided, either – you can import your own music, making the experience that much more personal. Find the trailer above and be on the lookout for this in the Google Play Store sometime soon. [Droid Gamers]

ZTE N910 Hits the FCC with LTE

This image has no alt text

ZTE has had another new handset approved at the FCC, meaning we should see its arrival to North America sometime soon. It’s the ZTE N910 and has LTE radios in tow. Specifically, it appears to be enabled to run on MetroPCS’s LTE network. Alongside 4G and CDMA/EV-DO radios, it will have a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, a 4.3 inch WVGA display, and Android 4.0. It should be pretty affordable compared to most handsets in this range but that has yet to be determined. Hit the source link to check out the full FCC filing. [FCC via Engadget]

Volvo Ocean Race: Five tips for sailing fitness

Pocket-lint Promotion
Volvo Ocean Race: Five tips for sailing fitness

The Volvo Ocean Race is harsh on the boats, tough on the shore team and physically, unbelievably brutal on the race crew. All teams know that being in the best shape possible will be critical to victory.

When vital seconds can mean the difference between winning and being the first loser - even on a course that spans 39,000 nautical miles - crews need to maintain peak physical fitness to ensure their competitiveness and avoid injury.

It is about being able to lift two tonne sails over and over again and surviving the rigours of life on-board, whether it is limiting damage from crawling through narrow spaces on your hands and knees to reach the nav station; managing dehydration and abdominal pain because the toilet is not exactly ergonomically friendly and is too awkward to use; or dealing with chronic fatigue because sleeping is not easy in cot berths which may be a bit on the short side.

That doesn’t even include the constant threat of back injury – the most common complaint from sailors. In one race, 36 cases of back problems were reported alone, ranging from significant trauma – when a sailor is smashed against a hard object – to overuse injuries caused by the lifting of heavy sails, repeatedly stacking several tonnes of equipment or grinding.

So, how does one prepare for the demands of ocean racing? Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing’s chief physiotherapist, Sarah Burney, has five key tips for getting sailing fit.

1. Train smarter, not harder

Efficient training ensures the best results. Plan your sessions with an appropriately qualified practitioner / trainer to ensure a good balance of cardiovascular, strength, flexibility, stability and co-ordination training.

Organise training schedules initially with the trainer and choose your exercises wisely to get the best out of your body and make the biggest gains. Review your plans regularly while thinking, "will this exercise help me achieve my goals?" and "is this training the best use of my time?".

2. Core stability prevents injuries

Your spine is a rigid and mobile structure from which all your muscles and limbs stem. Core training ensures your spine stays protected while you load all the other muscles and bones that are designed to take the weight.

Make sure you include some one-sided exercises or exercises on uneven surfaces to continually stimulate your core and therefore maintain spine control during movement. With a strong core, you might even find yourself lifting heavier weights, lasting longer, and avoiding injuries. Again, talk to your trainer to identify correct techniques and your specific progressions.

3. Stretching the right muscles

Stretching after exercise is the best way to prevent future injuries. Consider the muscle group that you have just been training and stretch those specific muscles after the session. Stretching will help decrease muscle soreness after training and help you recover more quickly. If you know you have muscles that are always tight, stretch them more often to encourage lengthening.

Avoid over-stretching long muscles.?If your stretch involves more than one muscle group, the longest muscle will always stretch more than the tight ones you are targeting. It is important to review these stretches with a qualified practitioner to make sure you are focusing on stretching the correct structures.

4. Adequate recovery ensures efficient training

Avoid over-training. When you are training, both general fitness and strength training, your body needs enough time to recover before you begin your next session.

If you do not allow sufficient recovery time then your body will not perform at its best in every session and you won’t make the gains you are aiming for. You want to make every training session count, so make sure you include rest days and recovery sessions within your weekly programme. Listen to your body.

5. Sport-specific training for best results

Do not forget your ultimate goal. You want to win the race, so train for the race. If your race is a short sprint, for example, make sure you are predominantly interval training. If your race is going to last longer than 20 minutes, like a half-marathon, then ensure the bulk of your training is endurance.

On the other hand, if your sport requires you to be standing the whole time, you should be focusing your strength and core training in a standing position. Take some time to analyse your sport and adjust your training adequately.

Remember, train smarter, not harder!

Russian reviewer raves over redubbed The Iron Lady pirate copy

A redubbed pirate version of The Iron Lady is making its rounds in Russia at present, and has had at least one rave review. However, the Russian-language translation, entirely voiced over by one man, changes much of the script, and depicts Margaret Thatcher as a "bloodthirsty, Hitler-admiring leader".

Of course, this sort of thing has happened many times before, but rarely has a top movie critic been so ably fooled in the past.?Russian newspaper Kommersant even went as far as to quote some of the changed parts of the pirated film in its glowing review.

The translated version of the Oscar-winning film has Conservative?advisors?calling Thatcher "a?heartless bitch" in its reworked script. She is also heard to say the words "crush the working class, crush the scum, the yobs" - albeit in a man's rough Russian accent.

Maybe they'll put this version of the movie on the DVD and Blu-ray as an bonus feature. Or perhaps not...

The Iron Lady (in English) will be out on Blu-ray and DVD from 30 April.

Archos 80 and 101 G9 Models With Android 4.0 ICS on Board Shipping Now

Archos is a French company that has recently getting much press for the fact that it makes affordable Android tablets, now with Android 4.0. Two new devices in their portofolio are the Archos 80 and the 101 G9 models, that are shipping right now. These cost less than $400, so they’re quite a bargain. Let’s see what you get for that amount of money.

Archos 80 G9 features a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, full HD 1080 video recording and Android 4.0 of course. This unit has an 8 inch display, while the 101 opts for the larger 10.1 inch screen. Both models are based on a TI OMAP 4 multi core CPU and as far as storage options go, you have plenty to choose from, including a 250 GB hard drive. The 101 G9 is Google certified, so you’ll find all of the Google apps on it, also including Google Play. The resolution supported on this 10 incher is 1280 x 800 pixels and you also get HDMI output, WiFi and Bluetooth.

Archos 80 G9 also provides access to Google Play, offers a front video camera, HDMI out, WiFi, Bluetooth and apparently free shipping is available for both models. I saw that the 8 GB Archos 101 G9 goes for something like $329, while the 250 GB unit is $389.99. The 8 inch unit costs $269.

Apple Sells 3 Million New iPad Units Over its First Weekend

With the recent bad press and those supposed overheating stories, Apple was bound to release some info to increase the appeal of its product, right? Now it appears that the company sold no less than 3 million new iPads this past weekend. This means in the March 16th – 18th time frame, the Cupertino giant moved over 3 mil iPad 3 units and only iPad 3, not counting the last gen version of the slate.

Philip Schiller, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide marketing said that this is the most successful iPad launch to this date and I certainly expect the figures to grow. And that’s because the product will be launched in 24 more countries on March 23. Over the past days, the slate has been selling in countries such as USA, Canada, France, Germany, the UK, Hong Kong, Japan and a bunch more. Starting with March 23 we’ll see the Retina Display iPad in Austria, Greece, Italy, Mexico, Poland, Sweden, Spain and more.

Previous estimations of initial sales were in the 1 million range, so this is certainly a success. I have to to remind you that the new iPad supports a 2048 x 1536 resolution, packs a 5 megapixel camera, an Apple A5X CPU, 5MP camera, 1 GB of RAM and also offers 4G LTE connectivity. Getting one for as low as $500?

Nokia Windows Phone design concepts show company was keen to change UI

Nice, but not needed
Nokia Windows Phone design concepts show company was keen to change UI

With the launch of its Lumia range of Windows Phone 7 handsets, Nokia may well have shocked us all with a complete overhaul of Microsoft's operating system graphical user interface. The metro-style look and aesthetic could have been ditched for what looks much more like, dare we say it, an Android approach.

Pocketnow has got its hands on a few preliminary mock-ups from one of Nokia R&D;'s senior designers which show a very different approach to the standard Windows Phone 7 UI.

It has long been known that Nokia has been given special dispensation by Microsoft to redesign its front-end for the Lumia range as it sees fit. But the Finnish company decided not to make such radical changes for the initial wave of Windows Phone handsets, Lumia 800, Lumia 710 or Lumia 900.

And now the designer herself, who has also worked on the Nokia 808 PureView, has moved away from the Windows Phone team to work at?Accenture, so it is unlikely that these concepts will ever be seen on an actual handset - nice as they are.

Nokia has claimed, to Pocketnow, that the designs "are purely her own personal design explorations and were never part of any project being done at or for Nokia", but as the site convincingly argues, why would she spend time working on Windows Phone UI mock-ups in her own time?

That'd be like us playing with gadgets and games in our own time... Er... Hang on...

Its dock section can house an iPhone or iPod touch, with volume control being integrated, and there's a 3.5mm?auxiliary?input to play from other devices. Frequency response is?20Hz - 20kHz, and the entire shebang can be powered by 6 D cell batteries or through a supplied power supply. A car adaptor or rechargeable on-board battery are optional extras.

The Get Up Stand Up (named after a Marley fave) is a home audio docking solution that can also work as capably with an iPad, as well as an iPhone or iPod touch.

It too is eco-friendly, being made of a?FSC-certified Walnut and Birch wood frame and recycled plastics. And its two tweeters and two woofers are each similarly sized to the Bag of Rhythm (1-inch and 4.5-inch respectively).

Finally, the Chant travel speaker offers one 2-inch full-range driver, with one 2-inch passive radiator. It takes four AAA batteries and is made from bamboo, recycled plastic and comes in a cotton carry bag. Connectivity is provided through a single 3.5mm?auxiliary?input.

Both the Bag of Rhythm and Get Up Stand Up docks are ?299.99, while the Chant travel speaker will set you back ?49.99.
